Key takeaways

  • Pentair's 5600SXT manual says the salt tank works best below half-full; above that, pellets may bridge.
  • SoftPro keeps the tank at least one-quarter full and A. O. Smith at least one-third full; your manual's level wins.
  • Pentair's 1.0 cu ft system uses 9 lb of salt per regeneration at its medium setting; once a week, that is about 36 lb a month.
  • Quality Water Treatment (Quality Water Treatment, our store) checks salt every 4 to 6 weeks and expects to add two 40-lb bags every 1 to 3 months.
  • The Water Quality Association asks installers to set softeners to remove 4,000 grains of hardness per pound of salt.
  • NDSU Extension says about 10% more potassium chloride goes into each regeneration than sodium chloride.

How full should a water softener brine tank be?

Keep the salt higher than the water at all times, with the brine tank between about one-quarter and one-half full. The tank does not need to be packed: it needs enough salt sitting in the water to make saturated brine for each regeneration, and not so much that it wedges together above the water.

SourceGuidance
Fleck 5600SXT manualMaintain the salt level above the water level
Pentair 5600SXT manualWorks best below half-full; fuller tanks may bridge
A. O. Smith AOW-S400/S500 manualAlways at least 1/3 full; refill when salt drops below the water
SoftProKeep at least one-quarter full; check monthly
Quality Water TreatmentAt least one-third full, to help avoid bridges

If your own owner's manual gives a different level, follow it. Salt piled into a too-full tank is more likely to form a crust; see salt bridges for how to spot and break one.

How much water belongs in the tank is a separate question. Fleck SXT valves meter that water by the programmed brine fill (BF) minutes rather than with a float. If water is standing high above the salt, read brine tank full of water.

How often should you add salt to a water softener?

Check the level monthly and add salt whenever it gets close to the water line. SoftPro checks monthly; QWT says every 4 to 6 weeks and finds most households refilling every 1 to 3 months, usually with two 40-lb bags. Morton, a salt maker, puts the average household at about two bags every two months.

Nebraska Extension lists what sets the pace: the number of people, daily water use, softener capacity and water hardness.

  • Hardness. Harder water exhausts the resin sooner, so the softener regenerates more often.
  • Water use. More people and more laundry mean more gallons between regenerations.
  • The salt setting. Each regeneration uses a set dose. Higher doses restore more capacity but remove fewer grains per pound.

If salt suddenly disappears faster than usual, check the hardness setting and water use first; QWT also points to a stuck brine valve or brine overflowing (see softener using too much salt). If salt stops going down at all, check for a bridge, then see softener not using salt.

How much salt does a water softener use per regeneration?

It depends on the salt dose your valve is set to, which is printed in the manual. Pentair's data sheet shows three doses for each of its 5600SXT systems.

Pentair 5600SXT salt dose and capacity per regeneration (maker data)
SystemResinLean doseMedium doseMaximum dose
VT-11-011.0 cu ft3 lb: 11,900 grains9 lb: 31,100 grains15 lb: 35,400 grains
VT-17-011.5 cu ft4.5 lb: 17,900 grains13.5 lb: 46,600 grains22.5 lb: 53,100 grains
VT-23-012.0 cu ft6 lb: 23,900 grains18 lb: 62,200 grains30 lb: 70,700 grains

The lean dose is the efficient one: Pentair rates it at 4,400 grains per pound of salt, and the WQA asks installers to aim for 4,000. The maximum dose adds only a little capacity for a lot more salt. If your unit uses far more salt than this table suggests, review your softener settings.

How long does a 40-lb bag of salt last?

At Pentair's medium dose and one regeneration a week, a 1.0 cu ft system goes through about one 40-lb bag a month. Count four regenerations a month:

  • 1.0 cu ft at 9 lb: about 36 lb a month, close to one bag.
  • 1.5 cu ft at 13.5 lb: about 54 lb a month, roughly 1.4 bags.
  • 2.0 cu ft at 18 lb: about 72 lb a month, close to two bags.

On the lean doses the same three systems use about 12, 18 and 24 lb a month. To work out your own figure:

  1. Find the salt per regeneration in your valve's settings or manual.
  2. Find how often it regenerates. Penn State Extension's example (4 people, 10 gpg, a 20,000-grain unit) lands at every 6 to 7 days. Our guide on how often a softener should regenerate explains the math.
  3. Multiply. Salt per regeneration times regenerations per month gives pounds per month; divide by 40 for bags.
Brine tank fill-level chart with a 12-tick scale marking SoftPro at least 1/4 full, A. O. Smith at least 1/3 full and Pentair best below 1/2 full, beside Pentair's medium salt doses of 9, 13.5 and 18 lb and a 36-lb monthly example

How do you add salt the right way?

Check the level, break any crust, pour around the brine well and stop well short of the top.

  1. Check the level first. Lift the lid and see where the salt sits compared with the water.
  2. Break any crust. Probe the salt with a broom handle before adding more; pouring new salt on a bridge hides the problem.
  3. Use the right salt. Buy pellets or solar crystals; the Fleck and Pentair manuals both exclude rock salt. Compare them in our pellets and crystals guide.
  4. Pour around the brine well. Keep salt out of the brine well tube and away from the float.
  5. Stop at your target level, about one-quarter to one-half full.
  6. Wait if the tank was empty. The A. O. Smith manual says to allow two hours for saturated brine before any regeneration when the salt had dropped below the water.
  7. Close the lid. Pentair says to keep the brine tank covered.

If lifting the lid each month is easy to forget, a SaltCo Smart Salt Level Sensor (sold by SoftPro, our store) from SoftPro tracks salt use and sends an alert when the brine tank needs a refill. It is priced from $89.00 (October 2026).

Does potassium chloride change how much salt you need?

Yes, a little more goes in. In NDSU Extension's figures each backflush takes roughly a tenth more potassium chloride than it would sodium chloride, and the WQA calls for a 13 to 15% stronger concentration, so bags empty sooner and the salt setting may need raising. Price adds up too: NDSU lists a 40-lb bag of sodium chloride from $5 to $10 and potassium chloride at up to $25.

Salt checks are one part of the water softener maintenance checklist, which also covers resin cleaning and yearly inspections.

How we put this page together

This guide is based on the salt and capacity data in the Pentair 5600SXT, Fleck 5600SXT and A. O. Smith AOW-S400/S500 manuals, the WQA's softener best-practice booklet, Penn State, Nebraska and NDSU Extension publications, Morton's softener FAQ, and the maintenance pages of SoftPro and Quality Water Treatment, checked in October 2026. Bag counts are simple arithmetic from Pentair's printed doses at four regenerations a month. We left out household salt-use figures with no named source and did no metering of our own.

Common questions

Is it bad to let the brine tank run completely out of salt?

The softener keeps regenerating, but with no salt Pentair says the brine is weak and untreated water passes through. After refilling, A. O. Smith says to wait two hours for saturated brine before a regeneration.

Should salt be added to a brand-new softener before it is plugged in?

Follow your system's start-up steps. QWT's Fleck guide adds two 40-lb bags at start-up and SoftPro's Elite guide says 1 to 3 bags, while the Fleck manual has you add salt after cycling the valve.

Does a bigger brine tank mean buying less salt?

No. A bigger tank holds more between top-ups, but salt use depends on the salt dose and how often the softener regenerates, not the size of the tank.

How many pounds of salt fit in a typical brine tank?

It depends on the tank. As one example, QWT lists its round 18x33 brine tank at a 375 lb capacity. Keeping it roughly half full or less is still the target.

Can a higher salt setting make the water softer?

Not softer, only longer between regenerations. Pentair's table shows the maximum dose adds capacity, but the lean dose removes more grains per pound of salt.

Why does the salt level drop faster in winter or with guests?

More people and more water use mean more regenerations, which Nebraska Extension lists among the drivers of salt use. The level should settle back once use returns to normal.
