Water softener parts split into two groups: the resin tank with its control valve, bypass and distributor tube, and the brine tank with its brine well, brine valve, float and air check.

What are the main water softener parts?
A typical single-tank softener has two tanks joined by a small brine line. The tall tank holds the resin and carries the control valve; the shorter, wider tank holds salt and water. Pentair's 5600SXT operation manual lists what comes in the box: the softener tank with valve and power transformer, the salt tank with cover, a bypass valve, a drain line fitting, brine line tubing, a tubing clamp, the manual and a brine well.
What does each part on the resin tank side do?
Working from your plumbing inward:
- Bypass valve. Fitted between the pipes and the control valve, it sends water around the softener for service. The Fleck manual says to always provide one if the unit doesn't come with it. The bypass valve guide shows each position.
- Yoke or adapter. The short fitting that joins the valve to the plumbing or bypass. Quality Water Treatment lists the Fleck 3/4" Noryl yoke (18706-02) from $23.99 (October 2026).
- Control valve. The head that runs service and regeneration, holding the piston, seals and spacers, the injector, the drain line flow control (DLFC) and, on metered models, a flow meter. The control valve guide covers it in depth.
- Resin (mineral) tank. A pressure vessel holding the ion-exchange resin. Pentair's 5600SXT systems use 9x48, 10x54 and 12x52 tanks holding 1, 1.5 and 2 cu ft of resin.
- Distributor (riser) tube. In service, Pentair's manual says water flows down through the resin bed and up the riser tube to the house. A slotted basket at its base keeps beads in the tank; Fleck wants the top trimmed flush with the tank opening or to the valve drawing.
- Resin. Small beads that swap calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium. Pentair's sheet lists 8% cross-linked resin, and SoftPro recommends 10% cross-linked resin for chlorinated city water.
- Gravel underbed (some systems). Quality Water Treatment describes its 12-lb bedding gravel as support media that promotes even flow and water distribution.
What sits inside the brine tank?
The brine tank holds salt and the water that dissolves it into brine. Its working parts sit in a tube called the brine well:
- Brine well. An open tube, often 4 inches across, that keeps salt away from the float. Quality Water Treatment's round 18x33 brine tank comes with a 4-inch brine well, an overflow, 3/8" tubing and a Fleck 2310 safety valve, rated at 375 lb.
- Brine valve and float. The float shuts off refill if the control valve misbehaves, so the tank does not overflow.
- Air check. Pentair's manual says brine draw ends when the air check in the salt tank closes, which stops air from entering the valve.
- Salt grid (optional). A raised platform on some tanks. The store lists a 15x17 grid as a way to help prevent salt bridges.

Which water softener parts wear out?
Seals, injector screens, floats and O-rings wear; tanks and resin last much longer. The troubleshooting tables in the Fleck manual (42684 Rev B) and Pentair's 4005293 point to these parts:

Valve internals. Quality Water Treatment's 5600SXT install guide recommends a yearly piston, seal and spacer service with Fleck kit 60010307. Pentair allows only silicone lubricant on O-rings and rules out petroleum-based grease.
Brine valve. Debris in the brine valve is one cause of excess water in the brine tank in the Fleck table, and NDSU Extension says to check and clean the valve and float as often as needed. Quality Water Treatment sells the brine valve assembly (BV2310-C, replacing FL2310BVSC) (sold by Quality Water Treatment, our store), which pairs a Fleck 2310 safety brine valve that prevents overfilling with a #500 air check and a pickup tube you cut to your tank, from $60 (October 2026).
Distributor tube. Hard water can also come from a leaking distributor tube; Pentair's fix is to look for cracks and check the O-ring and tube pilot. Quality Water Treatment's Fleck distributor tube (sold by Quality Water Treatment, our store) is listed for 5600 and 2510 control valves: 1-inch (1.050 OD), cut to fit tanks up to 65 inches, from $52 (October 2026). Resin. Penn State says red, oxidized iron clogs resin and that some resins cannot be washed and need replacing. The resin replacement guide has the steps.
How do you match replacement water softener parts?
Match by valve model and part number, not by how the part looks. Work through these checks before you order:
- Identify the valve. Note the brand and model on the cover or label, such as Fleck 5600SXT, Fleck 2510SXT or SoftPro Elite. On a 5600SXT, the diagnostic screen also shows the software version, and Pentair's Fleck SXT timer manual lists the separate turbine and paddle meter assemblies used across valve sizes.
- Use part numbers. Fleck parts carry numbers such as 60014 for the 2310 safety brine valve, 60002 for the #500 air check and 60626 for the 3/4" electronic meter, which the store lists for 5000, 5600, 2510, 9000 and 9100 SE and SXT valves from $154.95 (October 2026).
- Check the listed fit. Buy only parts whose listing names your valve. Quality Water Treatment's Fleck 3/4" stainless bypass (sold by Quality Water Treatment, our store) is listed as fitting most Fleck 5600, 5800, 2510, 9100 and 9000 valves, with 3/4" female NPT connections, from $120 (October 2026).
- Check pipe type. Several quick-connect hoses in both stores are marked not for PVC.
- Measure the tank. Distributor tube length and brine grid size depend on tank height and diameter.
What safety steps come before removing parts?
Put the softener in bypass, relieve pressure and unplug it before any valve part comes off. For plumbing changes beyond the softener itself, such as a new drain connection, follow local code and use a licensed plumber if you are unsure. Common questions
What does the air check in a brine tank do?
It sits at the bottom of the brine pickup tube and closes when the brine runs out, so the valve doesn't pull air into the resin tank. Pentair's manual says the brine draw step ends when the air check closes.
Is the brine well the same as the brine valve?
No. The brine well is the open tube inside the brine tank, often 4 inches across, and the brine valve with its float sits inside it. The well keeps salt away from the float so it can move freely.
What is the riser tube in a softener?
It is another name for the distributor tube. Pentair's manual describes softened water flowing up through the riser tube from the bottom of the resin bed to the valve outlet.
Which parts come with a new softener system?
Pentair's 5600SXT box holds 8 items, from the softener tank with valve and transformer to the brine well. Plumbing pieces to connect the house and the salt are not included, so plan for those separately.
How often should the brine valve be cleaned?
Nebraska Extension sets a yearly minimum for inspecting and cleaning the float and brine valve, and NDSU says as often as needed. Clean it sooner if the brine tank overfills.
Does a 2510 valve use the same tank seal as a 5600?
Not always, so check the part listing. Quality Water Treatment lists the 19197 tank slip ring for 2510 and 2510SXT valves, from $12 (October 2026), to fix leaks where the valve seals against the tank.
