Fixing a Leaking Water Softener

Why is my water softener leaking?

A water softener leaks where a seal has worn, a joint has loosened or a part has cracked. SoftPro's page on leaks near the valve (SoftPro, our store) puts a cracked rotor valve first, then O-rings in the bypass that dry out without lubricant, loose connections, a faulty float valve, debris in the valve and parts reassembled out of line.

Pressure is the hidden cause. SoftPro says pressure above 60 psi strains valve parts and seals, and a failed pressure-reducing valve can push it there. The Fleck 5600SXT service manual sets the valve's ceiling at 125 psi and says a pressure-reducing valve must go in when daytime pressure exceeds 80 psi, because night pressure climbs higher.

Small drips add up. The EPA's Fix a Leak Week figures put household leaks at more than 9,300 gallons a year in an average home.

How do you find a water softener leak?

Trace the water back to the first wet spot. Water runs along pipes and down tank walls, so a puddle under the brine tank may start at the valve, and a wet floor by the valve may come from the drain line.

1. Stop the water. Turn the bypass to its bypass position, or close the main shutoff if the bypass itself is leaking. Pull the valve's plug as well.
2. Dry everything. Wipe the bypass, the inlet and outlet connections, the valve body, the drain fitting, the brine line and the floor.
3. Turn water back on slowly. Return the bypass to service and hold a dry paper towel to each joint. The first one that comes away wet marks the source.
4. Run a regeneration if it only leaks sometimes. Some leaks appear only during backwash or brine fill. The Fleck 5600SXT service manual has you check the drain seal with the control in its Backwash position.
5. Check pressure. Put a gauge on a hose bib or laundry tap. If it reads above 60 psi, SoftPro's limit, or the daytime figure tops 80 psi, Fleck's trigger for a pressure-reducing valve, fix the pressure as well as the leak. Follow your own manual's limit.
6. Watch the meter for hidden leaks. The EPA suggests reading the water meter before and after two hours with no water use; any change means water is going somewhere.

Is the bypass or a fitting leaking?

Start at the bypass and the inlet and outlet connections, because O-rings and loose fittings sit at the top of SoftPro's list. Most fixes here are new seals and correct tightening.

Bypass O-rings. SoftPro's order is to shut off water and power, replace the seals, lubricate them, then run a regeneration and check for leaks. Pentair's 5600SXT manual allows only 100% silicone lubricant and warns that non-silicone grease can make plastic parts fail over time. Before the water goes back on, rotate the two bypass handles 2 to 3 times to seat the O-rings.

Stuck handles. SoftPro's bypass positions guide (SoftPro, our store) warns that forcing a stuck handle can crack the valve body or damage the internal cartridge. A body with hairline cracks, warping or corrosion needs a new assembly, not new seals.

Threaded and plastic connections. Pentair says to hand-tighten all plastic connections, use plumber tape only on connections without an O-ring seal, and keep pliers and pipe wrenches off them.

Replacing the bypass. When the body has cracked or the handles no longer seal, the bypass has to go. For Fleck valves, QWT offers a 3/4-inch stainless replacement (sold by Quality Water Treatment, our store) from $120 (October 2026); the store says it has a 3/4-inch female NPT connection and fits most Fleck 5600, 5800, 2510, 9100 and 9000 valves. If the leak is at a soldered joint or the main line, or a pipe needs cutting, call a licensed plumber and follow local plumbing code.

When is the control valve the source of the leak?

Suspect the valve when water beads on the valve body itself or runs down the resin tank from under it. That points to the valve's seals, a misaligned reassembly or a crack.

• Valve-to-tank seal. SoftPro says to inspect the O-rings where the valve meets the resin tank first. The Fleck manual has you lubricate the distributor and tank O-rings when seating the valve. A dry or pinched O-ring here weeps down the tank.
• Drain fitting. The Fleck manual says Teflon tape is the only sealant to use on the drain fitting, and to keep at least 6 inches between the drain line flow control and any solder joint.
• Injector cover. After injector cleaning, a missing or twisted O-ring on the cap leaks. Refit with new silicone-lubricated O-rings; see injector cleaning.
• Internal seals and piston. Worn seals usually leak inside the valve, sending water to drain or letting hard water through, rather than onto the floor. Quality Water Treatment's Fleck guide suggests a yearly valve service covering the piston, seals and spacers, with kit #60010307 on the 5600SXT.
• Cracked valve parts. SoftPro names a cracked rotor valve as the first suspect and says a cracked valve assembly should be replaced. Our control valve guide covers the parts.

Once the valve is back together, the Fleck manual asks for a check of every sealing surface for drips.

Why does the brine tank leak or overflow?

A brine tank usually spills because it overfilled, not because the plastic cracked. Check the overflow line and the float before blaming the tank.

• Overflow line. Pentair says the overflow exists so a malfunction sends water to the drain instead of spilling it on the floor. Attach 1/2-inch ID tubing to the overflow fitting, run it to a drain without lifting it above the fitting, keep it separate from the valve's drain tubing and finish at an air gap. • Safety float. SoftPro lists a faulty float as a leak cause, and QWT's page on a salt tank full of water (Quality Water Treatment, our store) names a failed safety float first. For a Fleck brine tank, QWT offers the BV2310-C brine valve assembly, which replaces FL2310BVSC (sold by Quality Water Treatment, our store), from $60 (October 2026). The store describes it as a #500 air check with brine pickup tube, which keeps air from being drawn into the valve, plus a 2310 brine valve that prevents overfilling.
• Why it overfilled. A float only stops the symptom. Pentair's troubleshooting table blames excess brine water on a plugged drain line flow control, a plugged injector, a timer that isn't cycling or debris in the brine valve; QWT's troubleshooting page (Quality Water Treatment, our store) adds kinked brine lines. • Drain line. Walk the drain line along its full run. Pentair calls for at least 1/2-inch line; the drain line guide covers fittings and air gaps.

If the tank itself is cracked, it needs replacing.

When should a plumber fix a leaking softener?

Call a licensed plumber when the leak is in the house piping rather than the softener: a soldered joint, the main line, a failed pressure-reducing valve or anything that needs a pipe cut. SoftPro also suggests a professional for leaks that persist after new seals, suspected cracks, and units still under warranty, where a DIY repair could affect coverage.
