How often does a water softener need maintenance?

A salt-based softener needs a quick look every month, a few minutes of work every one to three months, and a proper inspection once a year. The schedule below pulls together the Fleck and Pentair manuals and the SoftPro and Quality Water Treatment (QWT) guides. Where they disagree we give the range; your owner's manual wins.

What should you check on a water softener every month?

Lift the brine tank lid and look at the salt, the water and the display. It takes a minute.

Salt level. Keep salt above the water line, roughly a quarter to half full. The Fleck manual wants salt above the water level, and Pentair says the tank works best below half full because fuller tanks bridge more easily. Quantities are in how much salt to put in a water softener.
A crust or bridge. If the salt looks unchanged since last month, push a broom handle down through it. A hard shell over a gap is a salt bridge. Pentair says to break it up, wait 2 hours, then start a regeneration; a second one may be needed.
The display. After a power cut the Fleck 5600SXT flashes the time of day. Reset the clock so regeneration still runs at its set hour.

Pentair's manual adds one more rule: keep the brine tank covered.

What needs doing every few months?

Add salt. QWT puts top-ups at every 1 to 3 months, typically two 40-pound bags. Use pellets or solar salt; the Fleck manual rules out granulated and rock salt, and Pentair warns that rock or snow-melting salt brings dirt and chemicals into the tank.

Clean the resin on iron water. QWT's Fleck install guide calls for periodic resin cleaning once iron tops 0.3 ppm on a well or surface supply. QWT's cleaning page suggests a resin cleaner every 3 to 4 months, and SoftPro gives 3 to 12 months for Rust Out; match the interval to your iron level and the product label.

The Pro Res Care label gives two doses. For a fouled unit, pour half a cup (4 oz) per cubic foot of resin into the brine well while salt is low, then run a manual regeneration, repeating if the discharge still shows taste, odor or color. For routine use, add a tablespoon (half an ounce) per cubic foot before each regeneration. Sanitize when needed. QWT suggests a bleach treatment every 6 to 12 months with about an hour of contact time. Pentair recommends disinfecting when organic matter or bacteria foul the softener. Dose by resin volume and follow your own manual: Pentair's figure is 1.2 fl oz of plain household bleach for each cubic foot, while SoftPro and QWT both work at roughly 2 fl oz, unscented. What goes on the yearly water softener maintenance list?

Once a year, bypass the softener and give it a proper inspection. Unplug the valve before opening anything.

Brine tank. Look inside with the salt low. Sludge, dirt or a mushy layer on the bottom means it is time to clean the brine tank; if it is clean, leave it.

Injector and brine line. QWT's troubleshooting page (Quality Water Treatment, our store) says to inspect and clean the injector and brine line every year, since hardness deposits build up in those small passages. A blocked injector stops the softener drawing brine. Our injector cleaning guide follows the Fleck manual's procedure, which starts with bypass, pressure relief and unplugging.

Control valve. QWT's install guide recommends an annual valve service, cleaning or replacing the piston, seals and spacers as needed; its kit for the 5600SXT is part 60010307. Pentair allows only silicone grease on O-rings and warns that other greases can make plastic parts fail. If the valve is unfamiliar, a water-treatment technician can do it.

Softened-water test. Test a raw sample and a softened one side by side with a hardness strip or kit. SoftPro says a wide gap means it is working, while readings within 1 to 2 gpg point to water going around the softener. See how to test water hardness. What water softener maintenance is needed every few years?

Empty and clean the brine tank. Pentair's manual sets this at every three years. Store guides suggest more often, so clean sooner if the yearly inspection finds sludge or odor.

What happens if softener upkeep is skipped for a whole year?

The usual results are a salt bridge, sludge in the brine tank or a clogged injector, any of which stops brine reaching the resin. Hard water then passes through. A yearly inspection catches these early.

Does a softener on city water need the same schedule as one on a well?

Mostly. Salt checks, yearly inspections and brine tank cleaning apply to both. QWT's iron rule for resin cleaning applies to well and surface water, so city homes usually need the cleaner less often.

Is the yearly valve service a DIY job?

It can be, with the maker's kit and service manual. Bypass and unplug the unit, relieve pressure, and lubricate O-rings only with silicone grease. A water-treatment technician can do it if the valve is unfamiliar.

How full should the brine tank be kept?

Above the water line and roughly a quarter to half full. SoftPro says at least one-quarter, and Pentair says below half full bridges less. Follow your manual where it gives a level.

Is it worth logging salt top-ups and cleanings?

Yes. A note on the brine tank lid shows when salt use changes, which is often the first clue to a bridge, a leak or a settings problem.

What does routine softener upkeep cost?

Salt is the main ongoing cost. A 40-pound bag of sodium chloride runs about $5 to $10 by NDSU Extension's figures, and potassium chloride up to $25. Resin cleaner and occasional valve parts add to that.

Is resin cleaner needed when the water has no iron?

Often. QWT ties periodic resin cleaning to iron above 0.3 ppm. Without iron, watch for signs of fouling such as odor or falling capacity, and sanitize when your manual says to.
